Discipline summary

Astronomy is the study of all objects and phenomena beyond the atmospheric boundaries of the Earth. Astrophysics is a subset of astronomy and physics concerned with the attributes that govern celestial objects. The differences between these disciplines were historically based on astronomy as an observational science, charged with the describing and cataloguing space, and astrophysics as a theoretical science; however, these differences are now largely semantic. Astronomers and astrophysicists today use a combination of observational and theoretical tools such as telescopes and analytical models.

  1. We review current understanding of star formation, outlining an overall theoretical framework and the observations that motivate it. A conception of star formation has emerged in which turbulence plays a dual role, both creating overdensities to…
  2. We use N-body simulations to investigate the structure of dark halos in the standard Cold Dark Matter cosmogony. Halos are excised from simulations of cosmologically representative regions and are resimulated individually at high resolution. We…
  3. Stellar clusters are born embedded within giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and during their formation and early evolution are often only visible at infrared wavelengths, being heavily obscured by dust. Over the last 15 years advances in infrared…
  4. We describe the GALFORM semi-analytic model for calculating the formation and evolution of galaxies in hierarchical models. It improves upon, and extends, the Cole et al 1994 model. The model employs a new Monte-Carlo algorithm to follow the merging…
  5. We present a full-sky 100 mu m map that is a reprocessed composite of the COBE/DIRBE and IRAS/ISSA maps, with the zodiacal foreground and confirmed point sources removed. Before using the ISSA maps, we remove the remaining artifacts from the IRAS…
  6. The striking broad emission line spectroscopic appearance of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars has long defied analysis, due to the extreme physical conditions within their line and continuum forming regions. Recently, model atmosphere studies have advanced…
  7. We take advantage of the largest high-resolution simulation of cosmic structure growth ever carried out - the Millennium Simulation of the concordance LambdaCDM cosmogony - to study how the star formation histories, ages and metallicities of…
