Senior Data Mining Engineer (Central London, UK)
Mendeley is a start-up developing social software and Web 2.0 tools to transform the way science is done. Our vision is to create a “Last.fm for Research”. We’re funded by and working with some of the people who built Skype and Last.fm, as well as prominent academics from world-class universities.
Mendeley consists of two parts: Mendeley Desktop, free cross-platform software (Win, Mac, Linux) for managing and sharing research papers, and Mendeley Web, a website for managing research papers online, discovering research trends and connecting to like-minded academics. If you want to be part of it, here’s your chance: We’re currently looking for a talented Data Mining Engineer to join our Mendeley team!
What you’ll be doing:
- Design and implement recommendation engine specs to deliver the most relevant information to the end-user
- Work with large-scale databases
- Utilize distributed data processing strategies using frameworks such as Hadoop
- Lead in developing the recommendation engine team
- Shape Mendeley with your own ideas, enthusiasm and personality
What you should ideally bring:
- Expert experience in the area of recommendation engines, large-scale data mining or machine learning
- Experience with Amazon Elastic MapReduce or other distributed data services
- Very good knowledge in C/C++, Java, or relevant languages to perform CPU intensive calculations
- Product management experience or familiarity
- PhD or Masters with research performed in data mining, machine learning, biomedical informatics, AI, or a similar area

PHP/MySQL Web Developer (Central London, UK)

What you’ll be doing:
- Contribute to the design and development of Mendeley Web
- Code primarily in PHP
- Ensure scalability and flexibility of Mendeley’s overall data model
- Optimize SQL statements and undertake performance and security testing
- Administer our local and server infrastructure
- Shape Mendeley with your own ideas, enthusiasm and personality
What you should ideally bring:
- Computer Science or Engineering degree
- Good knowledge of PHP
- Strong database experience (MySQL/PostgreSQL) and be able to write lightning quick SQL queries
- Experience in *nix server administration and version control systems such as SVN
- Strong analytical, performance, data modeling, design and architecture skills (low level system skills a plus)

What you should ideally bring:
- Study Computer Science or a related field in your final year
- Good knowledge developing in JavaScript, AJAX, XHTML, CSS (PHP/MySQL knowledge a plus)
