In this paper we describe a research agenda to improve social signaling capabilities in avatars used in immersive 3D worlds. Avatars are a primary social affordance in these worlds, yet their social signaling capacities are still quite limited and cumbersome, which limits opportunities to create social connectedness. Our approach brings social scientific, animation, such as Disney animation theory, and movement theory, such as Laban and Delsarte, and research results to bear on reengineering avatars’ social signals as well as strategies for puppeteering them.
