Abstract

If the right questions are asked, all elements in a cultural landscape - itself a unity - are equally important clues to culture when they are looked at in their geographic context. Common landscapes are hard to study by conventional academic methods although an understanding of their history and physical geography is essential if they are to convey their 'messages' to the landscape reader.-C.A.Middleton
