Baby boomers and the new demographics of America's seniors

Abstract

This article discusses the new demographics of America's seniors, focusing on the Baby Boom Generation, who will swell the senior ranks for the next twenty years. It emphasizes the significance of the geographic impact caused by a tendency to age-in-place that baby boomers will exert on parts of the United States that have not typically had substantial senior populations. It also suggests an impending cultural generation gap between increasingly minority child populations and a largely white senior population. The analysis draws from recent government demographic sources, including the Current Population Survey, Population Estimates, the American Community Survey, and census population projections.
