Abstract

This paper provides background information and associated definitions concerning international cultural and heritage tourism, and describes various aspects of this sector, including its management and impacts, market profile (as of 2004), the accommodation of cultural/heritage tourists, their sources of market information, and the industry outlook. Four case studies are presented, which deal with: visitor perspectives on European Cities of Culture; the demand for cultural tourism in New Zealand; the World Heritage Tourism Programme; and the Silk Road Tourism Project in Central Asia and the Caucasus.
