Decision Support Systems: A Summary, Problems, and Future Trends
Issues confronting decision support systems (DSS) in the business/management area are examined after presenting the characteristics and components of DSS in detail. It is noted that work activities requiring decision making form a range of problems and that personality and cognitive style can affect individuals' decision styles, therefore causing different decision aids to be used. DSS development and applications, such as corporate financial planning, marketing analysis, real estate investments, and transportation routing, are described. The main problems facing DSS are discussed. These include: 1. data capture and collection, 2. data integrity and security, 3. DSS management, 4. cost-effectiveness, and 5. standardization. The future trends of DSS, including group DSS, decision support centers, strategic DSS, and intelligent DSS, are also examined.
