Abstract

This report presents an overview of the vehicle-cycle module in the Greenhouse gases, Regulated Emissions, and Energy use in Transportation (GREET) model developed by the Argonne National Laboratory. The vehicle-cycle module evaluates energy and emissions associated with materials production, parts and vehicle fabrication and vehicle disposal using a vehicle level approach. The model includes six types of mid-size passenger car: three types of powertrains systems (ICV, HEV and FCV), with conventional and material and lightweight material. Module structure and main assumptions are presented here, as well as the results obtained for the six types of vehicle evaluated. Results show that materials production accounts fir the largest share of indirect energy and emissions, which can be reduced by recycling. Additionally, the results show the existance of a significant net benefit in energy use and emissions reduction of materials substitution using lighweight materials
