Abstract

Alzheimer's disease is the most frequent age-associated neurodegenerative disease. Its cognitive and neuropsychiatric manifestations result in progressive disorder and disability. Alzheimer's disease affects approximately 10% of patients more than 65 years old and 40% of patients more than 80 years old. It is estimated that, in 2050, 25% of the global population will be elderly, thus increasing the disease prevalence. The initial symptom is characterized by progressive loss of recent memory. The progressive impairment in cognitive faculties such as memory, verbal and visuospatial ability is often accompanied by behavioral disorders, such as aggressiveness, depression and hallucinations. This article aims at reviewing the main aspects in Alzheimer's disease, such as histopathologic features, neuroinflammation and current pharmacotherapy.
