Chiral effective field theory provides a systematic framework to study nuclear forces based on the approximate and spontaneously broken chiral symmetry of QCD. I sketch the basic concepts of this method, outline the structure of the resulting few-nucleon forces and discuss some recent applications in the few-nucleon sector. © 2008 Springer-Verlag.
