Abstract

Examined body dissatisfaction and the influences of age, gender, and anonymous answering. The Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) was administered to 294 12-19 yr olds. Results show that anonymous answering did not influence the measurement of body dissatisfaction with the BSQ in these teenagers. There were low levels of body dissatisfaction in 12-13 yr olds. There were no differences in BSQ scores between boys and girls. Boys' scores were stable for those aged 12-13 and 17-19 yrs. Girls scores were higher for those aged 15-16 and than those aged 12-13 yrs. For girls older than 15-16 yrs, scores did not increase. It is concluded that body dissatisfaction is established in the period between ages 12 and 16 yrs. Implications for body dissatisfaction as a predisposing factor in eating disorders is discussed.
