Abstract

Mobi4D is a generic mobile services delivery platform that simplifies development of mobile value-added services by offering reusable communication and shared resource components as part of an extendible IP-centric service delivery framework. As a communication service delivery platform, it is based on the JAIN SLEE specification which was developed by the Java Community Process under the JAIN Initiative. The JAIN SLEE architecture provides an abstraction between end user services and the underlying telecommunication networks and their protocols, thus simplifying the development of converged Information Technology and telecommunication applications. This paper gives a technical overview of the Mobi4D platform that is being developed within the Next Generation ICT and Mobile Architectures and Systems research group of the CSIR Meraka Institute. It also highlights the opportunities that such a platform presents to the developing world, particularly in light of the rapid penetration of mobile phones and related technologies in these regions. © 2011 Springer Science+Business Media B.V.
