Beyond highlighting the rich, robust foundational literature contributing to building the field of higher education engagement, this book also features a set of fresh, next-generation voices of community engagement. In this chapter, 9 essayists share their ideas about probable futures. These contributors were nominated by the Journal of Higher Education Outreach and Engagement (JHEOE) Editorial Board as the scholar-practitioner-leaders whom they saw as contributing and writing for the next 20 years in higher education community engagement (or related areas). The short essays were written in response to the following: If the JHEOE 20th Anniversary issue articles represent foundational ideas, what might be future directions building on this foundation? In essence, what do you think are important directions for community engagement over the next 5-10-20 years? What are the opportunities; what are the challenges?.
