Abstract

A one-pot synthesis of tetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloids in a phosphate buffer has been achieved, and a reaction mechanism proposed. The utilisation of mild reaction conditions readily afforded a range of isoquinolines, including norcoclaurine. © 2011 Royal Society of Chemistry.
