Abstract
The means used by young children to control their own emotions has received scant attention in the developmental literature. However, this competency represents an important aspect of developmental growth. This article emphasizes regulation of distress and negative emotions. It focuses on (a) the principles that underlie regulation of distress and negative emotions among infants and young children and (b) developmental trends that occur during the first few years of life. The role of caregivers is discussed as well. A goal is to offer ideas that lend themselves to hypothesis testing and empirical validation.
