Abstract

Hypothesized, based on H. Tajfel's (1981) principle of functionality of social judgments and M. Rothbart's (1981) work on memory processes and stereotyping, that members of a social group store in their memory more global and group characteristics of other groups and more individual and differentiated characteristics of their own group (outgroup homogeneity vs ingroup heterogeneity). This hypothesis of social characterization and memory storage was empirically validated in 2 experiments. (English abstract) ((c) 1997 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved)
