Abstract

Patient safety is paramount in medical procedures and treatment, and nowhere more than in an operating room. The Safe Surgery Saves Lives initiative was established by the World Alliance for Patient Safety as part of the World Health Organization's (WHO) efforts to reduce the number of surgical complications globally. The resulting WHO Surgical Safety Checklist's aim is to reinforce accepted safety practices and foster better communication between the clinical disciplines, (Implementation Manual Surgical Safety Checklist 1st edition). The Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term care has mandated the public reporting of compliance will the surgical checklist (Section 22.2 of Regulation 965 made under the Public Hospitals Act). Anesthesia, Surgery, Perfusion and Nursing do independent checklists of patients prior to surgery. Each discipline concentrates on specific issues related to their practice. This may lead to communication gaps related to cardiac OR supplies, procedures and flow. Our challenge was to develop and implement a surgical safety checklist to meet the needs of cardiac patients using a team approach. Team building offers greater patient safety and fosters a more cohesive workplace environment.
