Abstract

The article discusses the U.S. Education Department's position on technology in public education. At a forum on emerging technologies by the State Educational Technology Directors Association, Jim Shelton, assistant secretary for innovation and improvement of the U.S. Education Department, cited four requirements for all stimulus funding, including standards, data systems, teacher effectiveness and support for low-performing schools. He said it is impossible to fulfill these requirements without technology. Aneesh Chopra, White House chief technology officer, said technology can process assessment data so teachers can make adjustments to teaching to ensure better learning. Shelton predicted a National Technology Plan for early 2010 outlining a vision for the future.
