Abstract

This study was designed to assess the structure of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) for 559 professionals from diverses occupational services sectors (health, education, police, hotels and banks). Responses were factor analysed using principal components and Varimax rotation. Exploratory factor analysis offered four factors with eigenvalues exceeding unity. Items of Emotional Exhaustion loaded on Factor I, ítems of Depersonalisation on Factor II, and ítems of Personal Accomplishment on both Factor III and Factor IV. A second factor analysis was carried out with a specification to extract three factors. This factor analysis showed a factor structure consistent with the original. However, Items 6 and 16 loaded on Emotional Exhaustion and Depersonalisation dimensions, and item 12 on Emotional Exhaustion and Personal Accomplishment dimensions. As a whole, results show that the MBI appears to be valid and reliable for Spanish professionals.
