Abstract

This volume summarises the contributions of 37 papers from a NATO workshop on European Neogene mammal chronology. Following a general introduction the first section is general reviews of European mammal chronology. A section on regional papers includes "Aquitainian' faunas of the Aquitaine Basin, the Orleanian faunas in the Loire Basin, a preliminary zonation of the Swiss Upper Marine Molasse, faunas of the Bavarian Molasse and reviews of Neogene mammals from Poland and Czechoslovakia. Faunal datum papers cover the Proboscideans (2) Hipparions (2) and Equus. Biostratigraphic syntheses cover two contributions on the Spanish Miocene, the discovery of a rodent fauna of Asian affinity in Germany and a review of the dynamics of Old World biogeographic realms. Palaeoecology includes two contributions on mammal taphonomy and papers on the relationship between paleoclimatology and biostratigraphy and a detailed palaeoecological case study from the Miocene of Turkey. Information on the Neogene mammals from outside Europe is provided by papers on the Siwaliks (2) of Pakistan, China and its correlation with Europe, Africa and its links with Europe and a comparison of North America and Europe. A subject and taxonomic index of mammal genera are provided. -R.Foster
