is study aims to examine the intergenerational succession of educational assortative mating and its trends in Japan. Among various kinds of traits each individual has, assortative mating by educational background has received attention not only as a measure of openness in society but also as a cause of increasing inequality. Although previous studies have focused on assortative mating in one generation, this study, based on a recent discussion which proposes an intergenerational persistence of marriage patterns, examines assortative mating in two generations and its trends. rough an analysis of integrated large-scale datasets, this study reveals three points. First, the results suggest there is an association between the degree of educational assortative mating in the parent s and the child s generations. Second, they indicate that the trend in educational assortative mating in two generations has decreased, but also that it has been increasing in recent cohorts. ird, even aaer controlling for marginal distributions through log-linear analysis, the intergenerational succession of educational assortative mating has strengthened, the cause of which could be an increase in the association of intergenerational assorta-tive mating at middle and high levels of education.
