(from the cover) Statistics is the art of inferring patterns from data. The past few decades have witnessed the extension of statistical analysis from using only numbers as data to the incorporation of first text and, more recently, pictures as data. Since crime does not occur in a vacuum but in a sociocultural context, this book shows the way crime data can be analyzed with a map-based referent to provide this context. In describing the implementation of an experimental computerized crime-mapping system in the Chicago Police Department, this book makes a significant contribution toward a more efficient and intelligent use of crime data for understanding and preventing crime in a community setting.
