Abstract

The roots of Tibetan medicine likely were some early forms of medicine practised by monks which may have co-developed with ayurveda to spread from Northern India through Central Asia to the Far East around the time of the birth of Christ. Tibetan medicine defines the harmonic balance between the 'three juices', wind, bile, and mucus, as the basis of all normal bodily and mental functions. This article describes the basis of traditional Tibetan medicine from its religious background to diagnosis and therapeutic applications.
