Discipline summary

Design refers to the formulation of a plan that serves as the basis for constructing an object or system. Although there is no generally accepted definition of the term, the goal is typically to develop the simplest or most elegant solution to a problem. There are many approaches to accomplishing this goal which differ in methodology and guiding principles, but they also usually involve a graphic element or visualization, as aesthetics are often central to the problem. The study of design, as well as the process itself, can be interdisciplinary, as it is informed by economic, social, psychological and other issues.
