Discipline summary

Medicine is the study and practice of healing. Medicine aims to understand living systems for the purposes of enhancing health, preventing illness and prolonging life. Medicine has traditionally been divided into internal medicine and surgery, not including fields such as psychiatry, gynecology, and obstetrics. Internal medicine practices non-surgical interventions such as vaccines and antibiotics for prevention, whereas surgery involves physical remodeling of the body to repair or remove injured tissue. Medicine often uses a one-size-fits-all approach, but new developments in biotechnology such as genomic screening and stem cell therapeutics are making more customized and more regenerative therapies possible.
