What's your reaction to this: “ More than any of that, though, his claim is difficult to verify because linguistics is populated by a deeply factionalized group of scholars who can't agree on what they're arguing about and who tend to dismiss their opponents as morons or frauds or both. Such divisions exist, to varying degrees, in all disciplines, but linguists seem uncommonly hostile. The word "brutal" comes up again and again, as do "spiteful," "ridiculous," and "childish." Juan Pino-Silva This sounds good. How do you collect your cable data? TeVo?

Jerid Francom Nope. I wrote a Python script to harvest titles from the IMDb and then search for closed captions here: http://www.opensubtitles.org/es.

Juan Pino-Silva Ok. Thanks. I am looking at programming originating in Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Venezuela and the US to see which gender might lend itself to compare dialect features such as lexis, syntax, morphology and phonetics/phonology. Interviews and football narration/comments are some of the best candidates for a variety of reasons.

Hi all, I though it might be nice to create a repository for important works in Hispanic Linguistics -- our own peer-generated library and discussion forum.
Juan Pino-Silva
Juan Pino-Silva I agree. Discussion forums are very useful for network collaboration since they can ignite high-level argumentation on the topics of interest! The language of discussions could be Spanish or English.
