Does anyone have any background information regarding the Albacora Quarto and the cases that supported the actions of Hart Security in detaining it off Puntland?
Marte Simons
Hi everyone,
quick question: does anyone have experience with using/citing confidential documents (eg from the UN) they've found on wikileaks? It would make my research a lot more interesting, but I do not want any trouble with legality..
Grtz Marte
Osvaldo Caninas
Osvaldo Caninas Dear Marte if it is in Wikileaks it is no longer confidential per se. The problem would be if you would cite a document from the UN and you work for the Un....

hello chaps!
I'm looking for an article referenced in Axe 2009 A hands off approach. His reference for it is as follows...

Muhammad Shamsaddin Megalommatis, “Somalia: Blockade of Somaliland, Puntland, and All Somali Harbors but Mogadishu: the Only Answer to Piracy,” Somali Weyn, May 15, 2009, http://www.somaliweyn.org/pages/news/May_09/15May19.html.

I can't find it anywhere, does anyone know where I can get a copy? Sounds pretty interesting!
charlie smith
charlie smith I'm writing a paper on innovative solutions to fixing the problem of piracy off the Gulf of Aden. Axe mentions the article in passing as an interesting 'home grown' solution to piracy but says little more. I had wanted to look up the article to find out more and maybe include the ideas in my policy proposals.
Cheers.

Awet Weldemichael HERE IS WHAT HE SAYS. I HOPE IT HELPS.

Triggered by the English colonials in order to further escalate the Somali crisis, the Somali piracy is a time capsule that simply must cease to exist.

The international community has however the means to eliminate the phenomenon without resorting to military activities.

But, there is no Somali authority ...

Dear all,
Does anyone have access to the paper - "Armed Attacks against International Shipping Offshore Somalia : Acts of Piracy or Maritime Terrorism?" by Christopher C Joyner ?
Would appreciate your help
Tnx

HI guys, Like a lot of people here I am writing a Masters thesis on Somali Piracy. This looks like a fantastic resource! I read a pretty interesting article by Sarah Percy and Anja Shortland (web link below) and wondered what popular consensus was on it? They seem to have some pretty novel ideas and I'm interested in basing my research design on their 'incentive based' approach.

What do you guys think of the article and do you know any way of gauging how well it has been received in wider academia?

(also available on itunesU in a lecture formate if anyone fancies it!)
Christian Bueger
Christian Bueger Hi Charlie,

the Shortland and Percy, as well as Percy's stuff in general is well received and indeed innovative. In terms of it's limits keep in mind that this is an economical explanation, in which cultural aspects do not really feature.

Dear all,

should you be adding references to the list, please make sure that these are fully referenced! thanks Christian.

Still under-construction but thinking of looking for 'free-riding'and 'underpriovision' cases...what do you think?
Christian Bueger
Christian Bueger Yes, sounds good. IN the maritime field they call it the "black sheeps". But would it be states or shipping companies you are studying?

Cheers,
Christian

Hi, I'm currently writing my master dissertation on IR Theory at the Essex University , UK. Topic is Maritime Piracy within the International system and related problems of collective actions in counter-piracy activities. Fantastic useful group for research....

Christian Bueger Hi Diego,

welcome to the group. How will you be studying collective action problems (e.g. what will you be looking at more precisely?)

Best,
Christian

Hi everyone! I am a masterstudent Political Geography at the University of Amsterdam. I am currently starting my thesis and I am thinking of writing on the different perceptions of the problem of piracy of the several actors dealing with it. If you have any thoughts on this, please share! Thank you,
Marte Simons
Marte Simons Thank you for your comments btw. I really appriciate your input!!

Christian Bueger
Christian Bueger Ah I see what you mean. One basic question is what you take for granted, and which assumptions you leave to the actors. Maybe its useful to distinguish between objectivist piracy (where the incidents occur, what the piracy tactics are, etc.) and subjectivist piracy (how threatening actors think piracy is, what they think where it comes from, and wh...

Marte Simons
Marte Simons Thank you for your input! I am thinking about the definitions and maybe combine the terms piracy and armed robbery in 'martime criminality'.
The thoughts about the objective and subjective threat is exactly what risk analysis is about, so that seems as an interesting basis for my analysis. I am still looking though for a more or different theory I...
