Social Learning - Anyone know of any good papers/books touching on interaction design issues in this area?
Hi Guys, I am just curating an Online teacher training magazine here please get involved. http://www.scoop.it/t/ptlls
Papers from the CHI "Workshop on Educational interfaces, software and technologies" just published online. https://sites.google.com/site/eist2012/home/program
Has anyone seen this concept of Design Thinking: http://voiceprinting.wordpress.com/ These folks at Stanford really do seem to have a grasp on part of the discipline we are looking to create here.
Shared terminology would be a big step in the right direction. I've been thinking a lot about how to create environments that will change the analogies for online learning. We need to stop creating filing cabinets for learning objects (places to put documents and text and video that lack both context and conversation) and we need to start creating recipe boxes. Recipes have a purpose, something we are trying to make. There are steps to getting there, but you can improvise and make it even better. Both learners and educators can add steps to a recipe and then share that recipe, take notes on its effectiveness, and then share out the results. I think of it as crafting the experience that will allow for the building of learning (not learning objects, but learning itself). I think that research will move ahead when the MOOC projects of Dave Cormier and others move into a more curated existence and we start to think about how we can design around their concepts for a better environment.

Dorian Peters Absolutely, the materials-centred approach is tiresome. Have you looked into Educational Design Patterns? They take a more "recipe-inspired" approach with a lot of promise for allowing sharing of successful designs rather than objects.

I'm so glad this group exists. The User Experience part of Learning is exactly what needs more emphasis. We have the tools, but they don't allow our users to learn in the ways they need. It is time to define this as a discipline apart from simple eLearning. Learning Experiences can be rich both face to face and online, but right now many institutions are just scratching the surface of what is possible on the web. Essentially, we have only gone after the most concrete of outcomes, the test score. The conversation and the collaboration is where we will thrive.
Anyone doing anything interesting in this area of creating learning experiences? I may come across as overly enthusiastic, but I have been looking for folks who are interested in taking a focused look at how our interfaces and online learning constructs can influence and inspire our learners. I'm game to share if others are as well. What do you think?

Dorian Peters likes this.

Dorian Peters Yes! I share your thinking completely! I completely agree we need a new discipline, or at least some shared terminology so the area can get serious acknowledgement - I think that's the only way we'll see dedicated research and best practice development in the area. I'm currently trying to seek out findings that are already out there. As I read ...

Carla Kaiser Patrick Parrish wrote one that I really like entitled "Aesthetic Principles for Instructional Design." Our professors had us read a few of his articles; I like his writing style, he doesn't go crazy with the academic jargon. His website describes his research focus as "instructional design, design thinking, aesthetics, and how these overlap."

Ben Wilkoff Awesome. Thank you so much for this reference

For designers of learning interfaces, educational multimedia and digital learning environments. All elements of the learner-user experience from graphic design, to interaction design, usability, learnability, etc. What elements of the visual design of eLearning affect its success and support learning outcomes? What interface design decisions make learners more likely to feel comfortable, motivated, and more likely to learn? This group was created to uncover and share the research in this emerging area.
