Discipline summary

A definition of neuroscience: For starters. Mendeley currently has neuroscience listed only under medicine, which is OK, but it also certainly should also be cross-listed under psychology & biology, plus computer science, chemistry, physics, and engineering. In my case my primary discipline in Medicine is Psychiatry which, oddly, Mendeley doesn't list at all. Early training in neuroscience (neurophysiology) led to me being a Neuropsychiatrist. This is an extremely interdisciplinary field, where investigators work at many different levels of analysis with a focus on attempting to understand the nervous system and the behaviour it produces, interacting all the while with the body as a whole, and with the social and cultural environment.

  1. At its simplest, voxel-based morphometry (VBM) involves a voxel-wise comparison of the local concentration of gray matter between two groups of subjects. The procedure is relatively straightforward and involves spatially normalizing high-resolution…
  2. Functional imaging studies have shown that certain brain regions, including posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and ventral anterior cingulate cortex (vACC), consistently show greater activity during resting states than during cognitive tasks. This…
  3. Functional MRI (fMRI) can be applied to study the functional connectivity of the human brain. It has been suggested that fluctuations in the blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signal during rest reflect the neuronal baseline activity of the…
  4. A motor performance which involves multijoint coordination and belongs to the natural repertoire of motor behavior has been studied. Displacements have been related to EMG in the lower limb when taking off and landing from a jump down (45 cm) onto…
  5. During performance of attention-demanding cognitive tasks, certain regions of the brain routinely increase activity, whereas others routinely decrease activity. In this study, we investigate the extent to which this task-related dichotomy is…
  6. Although it is being successfully implemented for exploration of the genome, discovery science has eluded the functional neuroimaging community. The core challenge remains the development of common paradigms for interrogating the myriad functional…
  7. We report the generation and analysis of functional data from multiple, diverse experiments performed on a targeted 1% of the human genome as part of the pilot phase of the ENCODE Project. These data have been further integrated and augmented by a…
  8. Despite a rapidly-growing scientific and clinical brain imaging literature based on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using blood oxygenation level-dependent (BOLD) signals, it remains controversial whether BOLD signals in a particular…
