Discipline summary

Physics is the study of matter and its motion through space and time. Physics is referred to as the “fundamental science” because it describes phenomena in terms of their most basic underlying elements. For instance, the four fundamental forces, Gravity, Strong, Weak, and Electro-magnetic, describe how the simplest particles in the universe interact with one another. Classical physics is study on the macroscopic scale, where mechanics work according to Newton’s Laws. Classical physics also includes electrodynamics according to Maxwell, thermodynamics, and special and general relativity. Modern physics has moved into the post-Newtonian realm, studying velocities near the speed of light and distances on the atomic scale. Physicists generally approach problems either experimentally, by recording observations, or theoretically, by using mathematical models to predict phenomena that can’t be observed.
