Biographical Information

Jim Austin earned a PhD in condensed matter physics from the University of North Carolina, with a focus on the dynamics of point defects in solids. He worked for several years as a researcher, then orchestrated a transition to science writing and editing. During the transition he created the now-defunct online magazine The Post-Careerist and served as science editor for the pioneering Web publication BlueEar.com (also no longer with us). He has been employed by AAAS/Science for almost 9 years in various editorial capacities. He became the editor of Science Careers in 2005.
