Biographical Information
Dr. Lorcan Coyle received a PhD from Trinity College Dublin in 2005. Since March 2009 he has worked under the supervision of Prof. Mike Hinchey in Lero – the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre and for four years prior to that as a research fellow in University College Dublin under the supervision of Prof. Paddy Nixon. He is a member of the ACM and Engineers Ireland (MIEI).
His principal research interests are in the application of machine learning to the fields of ubiquitous computing and context-awareness. He is recognised for his contributions to ubiquitous computing in the development of techniques for managing accuracy and uncertainty and in the development of algorithms for context-aware recommender systems. He has over thirty internationally peer-reviewed publications in venues that include Knowledge Engineering Review, IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications (Percom), the ACM Conference on Pervasive Services (ICPS), LoCA, ICOST, and Intelligent User Interfaces. He chaired the 20th Irish conference on Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science in 2009 and is a member of the editorial board for the International Journal of Ambient Computing and Intelligence. He served on the programme committee of ACM RecSys and LoCA, and has served as organizer and progamme committee member for a number of workshops and symposia in the areas of context-awareness and ubiquitous computing, as well as reviewer for the premier venues for ubiquitous computing, including Ubicomp, PerCom, Pervasive, CHI, IUI, and the Internet of Things conference series. He has also served on the organizing committee at Pervasive 2006 (as volunteers chair) and Pervasive 2007 (as publications co-chair).
