Biographical Information

I have worked in the department of Radiotherapy with an aim to develop theoretical and technical expertise in the field of Radiation Oncology. We register a total of 3000 new patients the department annually. On an average 200 — 250 patients undergo external beam radiation therapy at one time for a variety of therapeutic and palliative indications. In addition 40 — 50 brachytherapy insertions are performed each week. We have a 16 bed indoor admission ward along with two daycare centers where chemotherapy is administerd. Monthly about 100 -150 patients undergo chemotherapy at these two places for various indications.

As part of my work I have had the oppurtunity to participate in the treatment of patients with various solid and hematological malignancies. Common types of malignancies treated during my tenure have included various head and neck cancers, pulmonary cancers, tumors of gastrointestinal tract, gynecological malignancies, breast and lymphomas. A monthly rotatory duty under consultants specializing in these areas have ensured I have been exposed to the managament of these malignancies evenly. As chemotherapy is delivered to patients in our department so we have a holistic overview of the entire treatment process for most malignancies commonly encountered. In addition we have a complete palliative care clinic along with a hospice so that the importance of care for the patient and not just the disease is ingrained as a process of our masters training.

I have been quite fortunate to complete my training and work in a place where almost all the latest advancements in the field of radiotherapy are available. In addition an informal atmosphere, encouragement of independant thinking and working have ensured that the learning never stops. I have participated in the planning and execution of various advanced radiotherapeutic techniques like 3DCRT, IMRT, Image Guided brachytherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery and total body irradiation in addition to conventional irradition technique. As a part of thesis I have treated more than 50 patients of head and neck cancer with 3DCRT under the able guidance of Dr Ghoshal. As a part of SIB IMRT protocol till date we have planned and treated over 40 patients with head and neck cancers. In addition I have planned and executed the treatment using IMRT in various sites like cervix, rectum, pancreas, anal canal under the guidance of various consultants. With the availability of PET-CT in our institution I have also been planning patients with PET-CT for head and neck cancers. I have experience in working with various treatment planning systems including Eclipse, Oncentra, Advantage Sim Workstation, and Plato Sunrise.

I believe my traning has given me an holistic prespective in the managment of the patients with cancer with special emphasis on radiation therapy. In particular it has enabled me to learn to tailor treatment according to the patient's response and reaction to treatment which is so often different from the textbook described course.
