A moral importa?

Abstract

Bruno Frey proposed, in 1997, the Homo Economicus Maturus model, generalizing the standard microeconomic model. In traditional models, individuals react to incentives and, in Freys model, individuals care about the incentives themselves. His model allows the endogeneization of moral aspects in economic models. In this article, we use the Heckman procedure to test the role of morals defined as religious faith in criminal acts. We use a primary source of data, collected through questionnaires applied in public jails of the Brazilian state of Paraná. We find evidence that violent criminals (those who used guns in their crimes) consider morals in their criminal acts.
