Abstract

This is the protocol for a review and there is no abstract. The objectives are as follows: The primary objective of this review is to determine the efficacy of the different types of analgesics used for the control of pain during SWL for urinary stones. The secondary objective is to evaluate the safety of different types of analgesics used, need for adjuvant analgesia, and SWL parameters such as types of lithotriptor and shock waves, duration, stone size and location. We also plan to investigate complications related to the procedure, such as pain, urinary infection, obstructive uropathy, haematuria, haematoma (renal, perirenal, cutaneous, kidney injury, or steinstrasse); or those related to drug therapy (such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation, peptic ulceration or bleeding, decreased appetite, rash, dizziness, headache, drowsiness, fluid retention leading to oedema, kidney or liver failure). We will also attempt to quantify the number of lithotripsy sessions that occur globally.
