Abstract
The paper reinterprets the traditional historical view of the economic role of the Companhia Geral do Grão-Pará e Maranhão (1755-1778) from the viewpoint of economic theory. Despite the scarcity of historical data, the reinterpretation of the narratives about the company made by the classical authors does not allow us to conclude that it had an efficient role in terms of transoceanic trade. The historical facts seem to support a more traditional view of the role of the companys monopoly power, permeated by informational asymmetries and rent-seeking. Future avenues for research are also suggested.
