Biogenesis and characterization of histone messenger RNA in HeLa cells

Abstract

Histone messenger RNA in HeLa cells does not contain the large poly(A) segment found in the majority of mRNA molecules. Associated perhaps causally with this finding, the exit time from nucleus to cytoplasm is less for histone mRNA than for the generality of mRNA. Although the histone mRNA has these differences from other mRNA molecules, it may still derive from a higher molecular-weight precursor since it continues to increase in cytoplasmic polyribosomes for several minutes after the cessation of RNA synthesis. © 1972.
