Abstract

This book gives a complete account of the biogeography, animal and plant ecology, and natural conservation in the Turkmenistan region within the former USSR. This area borders on Iran and Afghanistan and includes both deserts and arid mountains; it is important for historical biogeography since it acts as both a corridor and a filter between the Mediterranean region, the Middle East and the deserts of Asia. The area was studied exclusively by Soviet scientists and all the information in the 32 chapters of this book was originally published in Russian.
