Breaking the barriers: the role of support companies in making open source a reality

Abstract

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to look at how the library sector might benefit from open source, from the point of view of the current vendor/owner of Koha, an open source library management system. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based on the author's experience in the library systems market. Findings The paper finds that increasing numbers of libraries are migrating from the major proprietary vendors to both Evergreen and Koha. Originality/value The vendor viewpoint supplies the value of this paper.
