Abstract

This paper deals with early reception of relativity theory in Britain. It challenges the notion that the British redemption of relativity can be understood in terms of a national style' of physics. It also argues that early uses of Einstein's work in Britain cannot straightforwardly be understood as a reception' of relativity theory. The paper draws upon recent work in the sociology of science to offer an alternative framework of local contexts within which the range of different British uses of Einstein's work can be understood.
