Abstract

Presented in this paper is a fairly general method to predict the critical column loadings on telescopic power cylinders based on finite element displacement formulation. It includes the flexural behavior of both cylinders and rods, the initial crookedness at the cylinder-rod interface, eccentricities of the applied load, support conditions other than pinned, and lateral load, due to dead weight of cylinders and oil. The element relationships obtained were programmed for use in digital computers. (These computer programs can be used for bifurcation-type buckling analysis as well as nonlinear load-deflection analysis based on iterative procedure.) An example was then analyzed both analytically and experimentally. A good correlation between the analysis and the experimental results was obtained. © 1986.
