Abstract
In recent years, catalytic production methods of converting biomass into furan derivatives have been improved significantly. One furan derivative, 2,5-Dimethylfuran (DMF), which is also called a 'sleeping giant' of renewable chemicals [1], attracted fuel researchers' attention due to its comparable physiochemical properties to those of gasoline. This chapter intends to give a brief introduction to DMF, and provide details about recent developments in its production pathway. A review of DMF's performance in spark ignition and compression ignition engines is presented, followed by a future outlook of bringing DMF to the marketplace.
