This book presents results on the chemical and electronic structure of intercalation cathode and solid-electrolyte interfaces in Li-ion batteries on the sub-nm scale and discusses the fundamental formation mechanisms for interfaces between ionic materials on the basis of energy level concepts. The results are obtained by a surface science approach on model surfaces and interfaces using thin film technology and photoemission as main preparation and analysis techniques. Model systems covered by this book are LiCoO2 layered oxide thin film surfaces, carbonate solvents and carbonate solvent based LiPF6 liquid electrolytes, respectively, as well as phosphate-based LiPON amorphous solid electrolyte films.
