This book adopts a bottom-up approach for exploring the Citizenship-Religion relationship in Algeria, Palestine, and the European Union. Religions have a role to play in democratic deliberation, but on an equal foot with any other group of citizens. However, their role depends on specific historical and socio-political contexts. Palestinians have some citizenship rights as individuals, but their community has no rights on their land, Palestine. The gender issue is most important in Algeria: the law contradicts the Constitution and rejects equality between men and women. In the field of citizenship, real practices may contradict formal principles.
