Abstract

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder characterized by abdominal discomfort and altered bowel function. New Rome III definition can be used for diagnosis. Alarm features (e.g., rectal bleeding; weight loss; iron deficiency anemia; nocturnal symptoms; family history of colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or celiac disease) should be excluded. There is no single treatment algorithm for IBS-C patients. Symptoms in IBS C can be treated with laxatives, fiber, antispasmodic & other newer drugs.
