Critical ethnographies of schooling are relatively rare compared with conventional ethnographic accounts. Critical ethnographies of health and PE in schools are almost unheard of. In this chapter, I discuss why critical ethnogra- phy is the method I chose for this study. I locate this work within the field of school critical ethnography, making links with several key international studies of schooling, only one of which addresses health and PE. I then introduce the school and students at the center of this study.
