Abstract

This paper starts from a recognition of problems in cross-national organizational research, many of which derive from theoretical inadequacies. It examines the contribution which arguments from culture, contingency and capitalism may make toward developing a framework of analysis for cross-national studies. In the light of the difficulties which have been experienced with the concept, special attention is given to the theoretical and methodological treatment of culture. Its relation to contingency and capitalism is discussed with reference to a comparison of organization and management in Britain and West Germany.
