This introduction to the papers presented at the first Archaeological and Anthropological Society of Victoria Symposium on Archaeological Dating places the proceedings of that event into an overall archaeological context. The role of dating in archaeology is considered, as are some of the methods available and their applicability and limitations, specifically in terms of their relevance in Australia. The concepts of reliability, precision, and economy are discussed.
