Derivation of vertically resolved ozone profiles by assimilating total column ozone data into the 3D-NCAR-ROSE chemical-transport model

Abstract

Vertically resolved ozone profiles are derived by assimilating satellite based ozone total column measurements into the 3D-NCAR-ROSE (NCAR Research on Ozone in the Stratosphere and its Evolution) chemical-transport model. This technique turned out to be a promising alternative to standard profile retrieval methods, since it allows to calculate high resolution 3D-fields of ozone distribution globally and in near real time. The efficiency of this approach is using ozone measurements of the 2nd mission of the Cryogenic Infrared Spectrometer and Telescopes for the Atmosphere (CRISTA-2) (August 8-15, 1997). This method is currently being used at DLR to derive the 3D ozone distribution globally and every 6 hours since April 1995 from measurements of the ERS-2-GOME (Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment) instrument. The results are routinely being validated by independent and quality controlled instruments from selected sites (World Ozone and Ultraviolet Radiation Data Centre (WODC)). Data are available from the World Data Center for Remote Sensing of the Atmosphere, WDC-RSAT (http://wdc.dlr.de).
