Abstract

A method was detelo~d 10 delermine Ihe concenlralion~ or oxalale~ extractable Fe(lll) and Fe(II) in sediment. Sedimenl ..as ex- Iracled in acid ammonium oxalate under N,. Iron(ll) in Ihe exlracl was delermined willi ferrozine. Iron(lll) in Ihe eXlraCI ".a~ reduced wilh hydroxylamine hydrochloride. and loCal Fe in Ihe exlracl was delermined wilh rerrozine. Oxalale~xlraclable Fe(III) '''as calcu. laced as Ihe difference belween Fe(II) and loCal Fe in Ihe exlracl. Iron(11) was not oxidized. and Fe(III) was nol reduced during Ihe exlraclion. For an accurale estimate or oxalale~xlraclable Fe(III). fresh samples had 10 be analyzed. because air-dr)'ing or freeze-drying Ihe samples oxidizeoi Fe(lI) 10 oxalale~xlraclable Fe(III). Wilh a minimal increase in analrlical efforl. Ihe melhod yields rar more inrormation on Fe geochemistry than the standard aerobic oxalate extraction method.
